Oni synagogue was built in 1895 in an eclectic style, but was restored in 1991. It's Georgia’s third largest synagogue after theGreat synagogue of Tbilisi and the synagogue of Kutaisi.It has a leader called Rabbi. Earlier, many Jews lived there, but now there left only 20 people. Oni synagogue was built according to Warsaw project. Synagogue comes from Greek word, and means gathering place. This architectural monument’s picturesque visually affects to the whole view of Oni.
Before the building the synagogue, the local people already had a small-sized temple known as "little prayer" ,and nowadays it’s also located in the same yard where the "great prayer."
All over the world, It is known that the synagogues are built based on the assumption that, the prayer, during the pray, should face towards to the holy city Jerusalem, so the eastern side of synagogue is richly decorated. Above the curtain there is placed the marble tiles on which Moses 10 Commandments are abbreviated. Synagogue’s courtyard is surrounded by the high cement fence.
